A late birthday present from her to me. We had a lot of fun on this trip and I’d post a few photos of us zip-lining and whitewater rafting, but she has all the photos on her laptop and she is now in Poland for 6 weeks. We left late on a Friday night and got to Banff, Alberta around midnight. Met up with one of Anna’s friends for a few drinks at a pub and then found a nice parking lot to set up our bed in the back of her car. I slept horrible that night with just a blanket separating us from the hard car seats. I sleep on my side most of the time so my hips really hurt in the morning! I got about 3 hours of sleep and then woke up at 4:30 am to rearrange our gear inside the car so I could fit into the drivers seat. I drove the car down the Vermillion Lakes road and decided to stop at the same place my other Rundle Mountain shot is from. But this time I used the reeds in the foreground to compose the shot. A fellow photographer who lives in the area was going to meet me there for sunrise, but he arrived after all the good light. Nice job Luke Austin!

For some reason I decided to wear a good pair of jeans for this photo op. (don’t ask me why, it was early in the morning) and put on my hiking boots to wade out into the water by the reeds. I was originally composed for the shot I am posting, and shot a few frames, but then the light started going crazy out to the east. So I ran through the water for a better composition and got drenched in the process. I should really invest in some hip-waders or rubber boots. The orange/red glow was really interesting and I shot off a few frames that I still need to get around to editing. Then the light started to fade and I looked back at Rundle Mountain and to where my original setup was, and the clouds were lighting up a golden/orange color over the mountain. So, I ran back through the water and set up again with the reeds and fired off the 3 shots I used for this photo. Oh, and that’s when Luke decided to show up!

“Dawn Light” Rundle Mountain reflected in 2nd Vermillion Lake, Banff, Alberta.

Buy the print here.

A few weekends ago, Anna and I drove out to Golden, B.C for some whitewater rafting, zip-lining and camping.
