Back to blogging and photos from the start of New Zealand trip.

Friday, March 11, 2011

Well after a long absence, I am back to processing photos and blogging! We have been super busy trying to get a place to live before the 18th of March, and that has taken up a lot of our time. I’ve finally begun to start going through all my 5000+ photos from our trip to New Zealand in January though! We flew from Edmonton – Los Angeles and spent 4 days there before flying out to NZ. I was able to explore and photograph a few beaches during our time there. This was my first time ever shooting the coast and it was good practice for all the coastal scenes I was prepared to shoot in New Zealand. The first shots I’m showing are from Abalone Cove during sunrise on Dec. 27 2010.  There wasn’t much going on in terms of clouds/colors in the sky, so I decided to shoot some long exposures of the early morning sun hitting the rocks and the interplay of sunlight and waves.

These first two photos are from the same image, just one is color and the other is black and white. I knew when I was shooting that these photos would look good in color and also without. If you look closely along the horizon you can vaguely make out Catalina Island, just off the coast of California. Be sure to click on each photo to view larger!

And here is another shot, a little more intimate, and once again presented in both color and black and white.

Hopefully I will have more time to edit trip photos in the next little while so stay tuned.

    Hi Mike,

Been following your work and I must say you are very talented!

Just a tip, if you start photographing people and animals (perhaps in a landscape setting), I think you could get a whole lot more recognition and make this a full time thing.

Keep shooting and keep blogging, I enjoy it.

    Mark I.

I’ve thought about that, and while I do sometimes shoot animals, I’m not really fond of shooting people. Maybe that will change in the future, I can’t really say. I have thought about putting people into the landscapes I’ve shot, I will have to experiment with that soon. By the way, interesting last name you have!

  3. Good to have you back Mike. I hope all is well.
Cool images. I think I like the Black and white versions the most.
    Looking forward to more!

I agree with you, the black and white is my favorite as well.
I should also mention I was using the Gold-n-Blue polarizer in these photos.
